This is a guest post by Sergio da Silva, a professional SEO in London. You have a new widget or maybe you are launching a new software on your website and now you want to tell the world. Sitting in front of your computer and already late for an appointment, you are trying to come up with unique and eloquent copy that doesn’t include the words ‘luminous,’ ‘ground-breaking,’ or ‘elegant.’ Unfortunately, I can’t help you with that. The online press release is still going to have to include some gripping and persuasive copy to attract visitors to your site or blog. In fact, the[....]

This is post was written by Gary Kohler from LifeCover. There are some local communities that are not served by mainstream media news due to their minimal size or far-reaching location. Keeping up on news and events in these regions can be difficult and relying on the weekly paper may be the only way of getting “current” news. Some traditional media outlets also place restrictions on the type of content they can publish. With a bit of work, your local blog can remedy these minor injustices and help you gain a following within your community. Writing great content, and lots of[....]

This is a guest post by Joe Wiedenbeck, the owner of The Pampered Parrot and a guest blogger on many pet related websites. 144,217,571. What does this number represent? At the time of writing this, there are 144,217,571 blogs according to Blog Pulse. 52,055 new blogs and 964,971 new posts indexed in the last 24 hours. These numbers are quite astounding. Do we really have that much to say of importance as a human race or is 90% of this parroting and unoriginal? I have nothing against blogging or those who do it. In fact I am doing it right now (well not literally because you are reading[....]

This is a guest post by Mark, the creator of StayOnSearch a Search & Social Media Blog and president of Search Creatively. Having a blog editor can be a great asset in maintaining the quality and standards for your blog. For any blog that is looking to grow and add new bloggers to contribute content, there is going to come a time when you will need to hire a blog editor. However during the growing pains of a blog, the blog editor may also have various other responsibilities, until you are creating enough content to keep an editor busy full-time. Without having a system in place for[....]

This is a guest post by Gary Kohler from LifeCover.ca. To get noticed as a blogger you need to stand out. You need to pick a niche and be the strongest voice of that online community. To get attention you need to stir the pot every once in a while but most of all you need to keep people wanting more. There are many ways that this is similar to the world of gangster rap and here are five reasons why. 1) “Final” Goodbyes Bloggers and rappers both love the “final” goodbye. The brackets are there because usually the final goodbyes are not actually final. Some rappers will[....]

This is a guest post from Eric Gesinski who works for Tulsa Marketing Online doing Tulsa Web design and Tulsa SEO. Blog SEO Tips and Tricks Writing a blog is a major part of internet marketing. Writing one that helps a site’s SEO and traffic generation is a little bit trickier. Here are some blog SEO tips and tricks to increase both. Core SEO ElementsWhen writing any blog entry, getting organic traffic requires good old fashioned SEO 101. This means writing proper title tags, description tags, and doing proper keyword research. Make sure whatever topic you pick, choose unique[....]

SeededBuzz is a site that promises to help bloggers promote themselves. Blog posts are promoted using what are called Seeds, which are summaries of a blog post that has been written on a topic that you think other bloggers may want to also write about. The idea is other bloggers read these Seeds, get inspired and write about the same topic, and link to the Seed owners post in doing so. The blogger that has then written about the Seed can then submit their post on the same page as the Seed that inspired them, under what is called Buzz. The idea is both Seeds and Buzz attract visitors and[....]

Since some days a rather nasty hack has been going round in the WordPress community. I actually noticed it myself not that long when I googled for ‘Chris Pearson‘ and what I saw in the results was… shall we say ‘interesting’? Prozac, Levitra, Lexapro? Had Chris sold the ‘Best Damn Blog on the Planet’, AKA Pearsonified? I went to check out Chris’ blog but no. No Prozac, Levitra or anything else of suspicious nature to be found there. Just your regular well-tuned Pearson content. I even looked in the source code and a quick search for known[....]

Smoke signals. They were effective in ancient China when soldiers needed to communicate over the Great Wall. But send one up today and your message will go up in – well – smoke. Getting the attention of a blogger you would like to work with or for is no easy task. Life feels like one big cluttered inbox. Here are a few ways to cut through the noise. 1) Write about them. Bloggers are not a vain bunch, but they do check their referring traffic on a regular basis. Insult them on your Website and they will defend their honor. Compliment them and they will be thankful. 2) Ask them[....]

I’ve never understood Blogger. In my humble opinion, it is a cumbersome blogging platform that has always dragged way behind the competition. Even under the Google umbrella, the novice CMS has failed to impress. But perhaps there is hope… Starting today, Blogger is rolling out the Blogger Template Designer, a tool that will give users much greater control over how their blog looks and operates. New professional designs, full color control, stock photo backgrounds and HTML/CSS implementation open up the door to the best looking Blogger blogs to date. The feature can[....]

A crusty old journalism professor I once had used to preach the following:“To get where you want to go, you should talk to someone who has been there.” Ideally, that’s where a mentor comes in. A wise and trusted counselor who influences our work and supports us along the way. You know, the older guy who has earned our respect by example. Now all he has left to accomplish is helping shape today’s youth. I’ve yet to find my blogging Mr. Miyagi (See Karate Kid), and I have a few ideas why:1) A numbers game. Perhaps there simply aren’t enough success[....]

As you learned from my Myers-Briggs self-assessment, I’m the kind of guy that rather blend in than stand out in a crowd. That means I can produce killer content, but don’t get a gold medal when it comes to self-promotion. As I was sitting in traffic this morning thinking up ways to promote my blog offline, it occurred to me that a great opportunity could be staring me right in the face…literally. What about a vanity license plate?PROS Promotion: For a $50 fee and $31.25 annually, my blog’s name will be visible to everyone who spots my car. In this day and age of[....]

As sure as I eat my breakfast, there are certain blogs that I read first thing in the morning. I’m not a coffee drinker, so caffeine addiction is foreign to me, but if you keep me from my A.M. blog reading, then I can get downright nasty! Here’s my blog reading routine. I log into my work computer, open up Outlook, get my music stream on, and then I start to knock down my “must-read” blogs, one-by-one. It’s an informational breakfast buffet. After I’m satisfied that I’m in the loop, I start my day “on the clock.” Like most office[....]

I’m a thief. Not in the Robin Hood philanthropic way, but in the robbing Peter to pay Paul kind of way. Let me explain. I recently started a blog about my puppy just for the fun of it. Unlike my other blogging endeavors, I have no real goal or agenda. I simply want to chronicle the experience of raising my first Shiba Inu. Other dog owners have been stumbling across my work and writing me with their stories. In turn, I’ve begun very lengthy e-mail exchanges with other Shiba owners. We laugh about the breed’s inherent traits that drive us batty. We swap stories on[....]

By now you’ve probably realized that a lot of your Web traffic is unexpected. By that I’m talking about the many people who stumble upon your blog in unexpected ways. Whether it’s a random page that has been crawled and ranked well by Google – or some random niche site picking up and promoting one of your links. When people land on your blog, you should not assume that they will hit your homepage or the landing page you have put so much effort into. That’s why it might be time to consider an FAQ. I’ve been spending a lot of time defining what exactly[....]

They come in short spurts and are unannounced; even I am unaware they are about to occur. I’m speaking of blogging blackouts, periods of time where some unknown force keeps me from blogging. Has is it ever happened to you? These stretches of time find me allergic to the keyboard. I suddenly don’t have much to say, and that my (temporary) preference for real-life interaction outweighs the desire to write. If might be my post-Super Bowl hangover, but I think these periods are happening with greater frequency, and I’m not sure what to make of it. I can only compare it[....]

Before you judge me, keep in mind that I never claimed to be normal. My blog reading habits are probably different than yours. And that’s OK. I’m Andrew and you are, well, you are YOU. Here’s a glimpse at how I size up a blog upon my initial visit. I’d love to hear from you in the comments on what initially turns you on or off to a blog. - ADS. I find that the types of ads a blog runs is quite telling. The blogger that I truly want to read does it for the passion of the topic – not the 14 cents they can potentially make off of some Lance[....]

Two months ago my wife and I welcomed home a shiba inu puppy. Saying it’s been a life adjustment would be an understatement. He’s flipped everything we know on its head. Each day is a rollercoaster. Whether we are on an up or a down on this doggy ride, it’s evident that there are lessons to be learned. The first observation I’d like to share is that puppies would make awful bloggers. Here’s why… INEXPERIENCE. Everything is new to a puppy, and of course, this is not their fault. with so much to experience for the first time, they are unsure of[....]

During a recent conversation about WordPress with some fellow bloggers, the issue of WordPress’ 2.9 features came up. Though I am a heavy WordPress user, running it on half a dozen blogs and writing for three other sites that use it, I wasn’t particularly blown away by the feature list. Though some things struck me as nice, such as post thumbnails and a “trash” can, and others seem to have great long term potential, such as comment metadata and custom post types, many of the much-touted features didn’t seem to be that useful to me. Image editing is a nice[....]

To be honest while I was exploring this new income-generating scheme offered by Google-ventures back Pixazza, the first thing that came into my mind was those in-text advertising that pops-out whenever you hover onto link in a blog post. Only this time, Pixazza is doing it with blog images. So what is Pixazza really?  In their own words: Pixazza is a new platform that allows shoppers to buy products from photos seen on websites of our web publishing partners. Our unique capability allows these web publishers to generate  incremental revenues by “visual commerce enabling”[....]
