The latest software for theiPhone andiPod Touch is available starting Wednesday for download from Apple. The company foreshadowed the arrival of iOS 4.1 at its annual fall press event last week and included an overview of the latest features. The download is free via iTunes for iPhone and iPod Touch owners. Besides upgrades to new features for games, photos, and high-definition videos, Apple is using this software update to zap several bugs at once. Among the issues Apple CEO Steve Jobs promised would be fixed with the installation of 4.1 are: proximity sensor problems that were causing[....]

(Credit:Quantcast) The latest report from Quantcast shows that Apple’s lead in mobile Web usage is declining. The data, published Friday, shows that at the end of August 2010, iOS devices accounted for 56 percent of mobile Web usage in the U.S. The reason the chart is making news is because a year ago, iOS had closer to a 70-percent share. At the same time, Android use is growing. Quantcast shows Android’s mobile Web share at 25 percent at the end of August, up from below 10-percent share a year ago. Research In Motion devices stayed relatively steady at 9 percent, and[....]

Apple will close mobile-advertising company Quattro Wireless at the end of September, it announced Thursday. “We believe iAd is the best mobile-ad network in the world, and starting next month, we’re going to focus all of our resources on the iAd advertising platform,” Apple wrote in a statement on the Quattro Wireless home page. “We are no longer accepting new campaigns for the Quattro Wireless Network, and we will soon begin winding down existing campaigns. As of September 30, we will support ads exclusively for the iAd Network.” The statement also includes[....]

(Credit:Designboom) (Credit:Designboom) Now, here’s a simple design that’s really ingenious. The Compound Body 2 is one of many handiworks from Korean designer Yu Kwang Soo and his speaker furniture collection. This particular piece hides a stereo with custom cutouts for the boomboxes, control knobs, and aniPod dock within a wooden desk. In addition, the table can be folded to reduce its footprint, while the entire concoction is collapsible for transportation. For this matter, a shoulder strip and handrails are included for mobility. Apparently, some of the inspiring[....]

SAN BRUNO, Calif.–YouTube has redesigned its mobile site, hoping to get more and more smartphone users watching its videos through the browser, rather than through native applications. YouTube's new mobile site should go live Wednesday afternoon. (Credit:YouTube) The company will unveil the new design at m.youtube.com this afternoon, said Andrey Doronichev, product manager for YouTube Mobile, during a briefing Wednesday morning here at YouTube’s headquarters. The main idea is to replicate the desktop PC-based YouTube experience in themobile browser, or to at least get as[....]

Android users can decline to participate in Google's wireless hot-spot data gathering, but they'll have to forgo getting their location information via hot spots, a reliable and battery-friendly method. (Credit:James Martin/CNET) There’s a reason Google can shut down its Street Viewcars and still maintain a quality geolocation service on mobile devices: it’s crowdsourcing the data. Mobile-phone and some laptop users who use Google applications to get a fix on their position or share their location with friends are helping Google build out a database of Wi-Fi hot spots,[....]

Good for Enterprise works on iPhones, iPods, and iPads. (Credit:Good Technology) When an employee at AIM Media lost hisiPhone containing company e-mails and other sensitive data last year, there was nothing to be done except hope that whoever found it didn’t care to snoop. Now, if that happens again AIM Media IT Director Nelson Saenz can just remotely wipe the data. “Apple made it possible for the iPhone to work with Microsoft Exchange,” he said. “But from an IT standpoint what was missing was centralized administration and security.” Since January, AIM[....]

(Credit:Quantcast) TheiPhone andiPod Touch still dominate mobile Web usage, but new monthly data shows Android is making some inroads. Devices featuring Apple’s iOS mobile operating system lead all other mobile devices with 58.8 percent of mobile Web traffic in the U.S. Android is far behind, but still in second place with 19.9 percent. Next is “other” with 10.9 percent, and after that is Research In Motion with 10.4 percent, according to data released by Quantcast on Monday. Though Android has a ways to go to catch up with Apple’s iOS, Android is beginning to[....]

Lookout's software blocks the auto-dialer malware hidden in the 3D Anti-Terrorist game app on Windows Mobile smartphones. (Credit:Lookout) Scammers are distributing apps for Windows Mobile-based smartphones that have malware hidden inside that makes calls to premium-rate numbers across the globe, racking up expensive bills unbeknownst to the phone’s owner, a mobile security firm said on Friday. The apps–3D Anti-Terrorist game, PDA Poker Art, and Codec pack for Windows Mobile 1.0–are being distributed on as many as nine popular download Web sites, including[....]

One of the Smart ForTwo cars that Motorola is driving around New York to spread awareness about safe, hands-free driving. (Credit:Caroline McCarthy/CNET) NEW YORK–Motorola has gone into high gear for National Safe Driving Month, and if you live in one of four U.S. cities you might even be seeing them on the roads. Earlier this week, Motorola launched a free mobile app to decipher the country’s various laws about cell phone calling and texting while behind the wheel. This weekend it’s kicking off its “Get Smarter” campaign on the streets in New York, Chicago,[....]

Access to Foursquare’s “check-in” app has been blocked in China, the mobile networking service confirmed with CNET on Friday. Rumors began to circle about the ban early Friday when tweets and blog posts from Chinese Foursquare users indicated that they could not access the service. Foursquare is still looking into the issue, co-founders Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai told CNET. Namely, they aren’t sure whether this will be a permanent block or temporary. But it appears to be linked to the 21st anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, the 1989 incident in[....]

This JetBlue ad will appear on the GateGuru iPhone app to advertise the free tickets the airline is giving away to the location-based mobile service's most prolific users. (Credit:GateGuru) Brand advertisers are flooding into location-based mobile applications–from Foursquare and its ilk to custom-developed apps like Starbucks’ store finder–and while there are sure to be some laughably bad attempts in the mix, one industry that can jump into the “check-in” craze pretty safely is the travel business. Take this one: A niche check-in application for airports,[....]

(Credit:Apache) If there is one aspect of mobility that has yet to live up to user expectations, it’s the ability for data to be accessible in near real-time across multiple devices. Despite all the advances in technology, including a wealth of Wi-Fi and 3G networks, many devices become impotent without an Internet connection. This issue becomes even more apparent when you are dealing with browser-based applications and smartphones that don’t have multithreading functionality to maintain state across applications and data stores. I recently had the chance to chat with Damien[....]

(Credit:McAfee/Trust Digital) McAfee said on Tuesday it has signed an agreement to acquire Trust Digital, a provider of mobile security and management software targeting corporations. The companies did not disclose terms of the deal or how many of Trust Digital’s 30 to 40 McLean, Va.-based employees will be moving to McAfee. Santa Clara, Calif.-based McAfee expects to combine Trust Digital’s solution that allows corporations and organizations to manage the smartphones employees use with its antivirus and other security software and its centralized management and reporting[....]

commentary Something strange happened last week at Google I/O, Google’s big developer event. Google may have attained cult status. There was an energy in the halls normally reserved for Apple events like WWDC, as 5,000 attendees chattered about Google TV, Android, WebM, and more. Google is ascendant, and it may take the fanboys with it. Android Froyo (Credit:Google) Apple CEO Steve Jobs may believe there’s “not a chance” that Google is leapfrogging Apple, and assures the faithful that “[they] won’t be disappointed” at WWDC, but worrisome signs[....]

Besides the wheel, fire, and air conditioning during the month of August, caller ID is on the short list of life-changing inventions. Though its one hang-up (no pun intended) is that its directory of phone numbers, which is attached to names and readily available for landline phones, has not been carried over to mobile phones. Instead, mobile-phone users get numbers only. One company that’s helping to change that is PhoneTell, which is launching at Monday’s TechCrunch Disrupt conference in New York. Formerly CallSpark (which debuted at last year’s DemoFall) PhoneTell aims[....]

commentary In an attempt to copycat Apple’s hardware-plus-software vertical approach to the mobile market, the Linux industry is fragmenting fast and risks undermining its best chance for beating theiPhone. The mobile Linux market has always had more variants/distributions than sense, ranging fromGoogle Android to LiMo to Moblin (now MeeGo) to Bada to WebOS to…you name it. Whereas Linux has been a rallying force in the enterprise server market, with diverse competitors and partners collaborating on a common code base to save costs and boost innovation, in the mobile market Linux[....]

Dropbox is getting more serious about its efforts to bring its cloud storage solution to mobile devices. On Tuesday the company is announcing a mobile API for developers to build ties to Dropbox’s servers into their own apps, as well as formally launching first-party applications for theiPad and Android and BlackBerry devices. The new mobile API is something Dropbox is calling “Dropbox Anywhere.” The company has worked with a number of developers to integrate their apps into the new data pipeline. These include Fuze’s FuzeMeeting app, Dictamus, Air Sharing,[....]

With its purchase of Palm, Hewlett-Packard acquired more than just a smartphone maker. It also picked up a whole new strategy for its mobile devices. HP said Wednesday it plans to acquire Palm for $1.2 billion, or $5.70 per share, which amounts to a 23 percent premium over Palm’s actual stock price at the end of the day. But for a leading technology company like HP with almost zero mobile phone presence and $13.5 billion in cash, picking up a company with a fully developed mobile operating system, a decent lineup of devices, and trove of mobile patents is a bargain. It will also make[....]
