The blockbuster book “The Pillars of the Earth” will probably become a blockbuster miniseries, if the promise of the first episode continues. The plot of the book has it all: A king without an heir, whose son was probably assassinated when his boat was sabotaged, a wicked bishop who is trying to manipulate things to get his candidate chosen as the next king, a King’s daughter who as a proto-feminist resents that she cannot be the next monarch, and the horrors to common folks of a civil war that will hurt the innocent more than the nobility. Against the forces of anarchy[....]

Most of the sharks are out attacking Mel Gibson’s shocking behavior. Well, it’s better reading that the other stories in the news, such as the oil spill or that suffering Haitians still need help. And it allows lots of folks to wax self righteous. Ironically, it is Whoopie Goldberg, a celebrity who also defended Roman Polanski, who came to his defense. Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time because they’re drunk. They’re out of control. They are not thinking they are idiotic. That’s why I don’t like alcohol. I can’t say anything about that because I know [....]

Shrek is back, and this one is a hit. If Shrek 1 was “Tristan and Iseult” or “the Courtship of Miles Standish“, and Shrek II was “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner“, then Shrek 4 is “It’s a Wonderful Life”. Shrek has a midlife crisis: Everyone loves him, and he cares for everyone around him. But he misses his days of freedom without his new responsibilities, which include Fiona, the triplets, and a cast of friends. Enter Rumpelstiltskin: in exchange for one day as he used to be, Rumpelstiltskin asks for one day in his past life. But[....]

Robin Hood was everything I expected it to be. The powerhouse combination of Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe will never let me down, I believe. I’m not the only one, either! Robin Hood took second place at the box office for its first weekend, being beaten out only by Iron Man 2. The previews reminded me very heavily of Gladiator. The camera panning over sprawling scenery, and dramatic battle scenes are present in both films. Even the tag-lines hold a bit of similarity. Robin Hood runs with “Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions” while Gladiator repeats “What we do in life[....]

Movie executives love it when movies do well. In fact they love when movies do well they want to do a sequel. Unfortunately, more often than not sequels rarely recapture the magic of their predecessor. Iron Man 2 does nearly everything the first film did only with more explosions and suits of armor. We open the movie with a voiceover montage during the Marvel Films and studio logos depicting the events since the end of the last movie. That leads to a Russian hovel were a dying scientist is passing on his knowledge of Howard Stark to his son, Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke). Next we are[....]

Just because it is stupid doesn’t mean you won’t laugh.“Hot Tub Time Machine” brings four friends back together after their relationships have strained and Lou (Rob Corddry) ends up in the hospital.  Their solution: to go to a ski lodge for the weekend. When they get there they realize that the place they had such fond memories of has turned into a run down old gost town.  Trying to make the best of it they get in the hot tub and wake up twenty-four years in the past. You can’t make this stuff up… sober. So while the premise is likely based on an altered mental state, let’s[....]

Now in Theaters “Stewart rocks.” In today’s world of spoon fed pop culture where American Idol can turn anyone into a mega superstar regardless of talent, The Runaways shows the grittier side of early rock and roll. Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Sandy West started their journey in the 1975 all girl rock band led by a cherry bomb of a lead singer named Cherie Currie. They blew up quick and burnt out fast but paved the way for all non-male rockers who wanted to strap on a guitar and make a musical statement. It is a hard film to watch in places but the two female leads make it a[....]

“Some will want to skip out on this bounty hunter.” The Bounty Hunter is a new film from director Andy Tennant (Fools Gold, Hitch, Sweet Home Alabama). It is safe to say that this one reaches out to the comedy/action fans while still throwing a bone or two at the comedy/romance lovers. The issue is that it tries to do too much of both and this makes for a cluttered flick that runs in many directions. Plus it adds one too many oddball characters. These faults don’t spell disaster but keep it from the must see list. Milo (Gerard Butler) is an ex cop turned bounty hunter who[....]

This movie has no star power whatsoever. In fact without going to IMDB the most recognizable actor is “The mom from ‘That 70’s Show’” (Debrah Jo Rupp).   That being said, this film has already achieved beyond it’s expectations having gained wide release without big name in the marquis. But don’t let that scare you away, because “She’s Out of My League” is hands down hilarious!   Kirk Kettner (Jay Baruchel) is a TSA worker at the Pittsburgh airport.  There with his three friends Stainer (T.J. Miller), Jack (Mike Vogel) and Devon (Nate Torrence) who have all known each[....]

“Burton is bonkers. But most great people are.” Tim Burton producing and directing a 3D version of the Carroll classic ALICE IN WONDERLAND just makes sense. Very few filmmakers have the vision, style and off the wall imagination to do the story justice. The question is how much is too much and at what point do you go from creative movie making to hallucinogenic mayhem? This might be as close to a drug trip as many will ever encounter. But it is a safe one to be sure. In this telling, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) falls down the rabbit hole as a 19 year old girl. She is fairly certain[....]

In theaters Feb 19th 2010 When you think of the early seventies you get images of many things. But rarely do you think of civil rights and the Klan. It is sad to consider that a decade after the civil rights movement that there would still be sections of our “advanced” society that still treated people cruelly and unfairly simply due to the color of their skin. But sadly it was in full force and the new film, BLOOD DONE SIGN MY NAME recounts one small North Carolina society’s march and stand against hatred and injustice. Based on the true story and book by prize-winning author and[....]

“Shutter Island is crazy good!” Scorsese has once again teamed up with Leonardo DiCaprio. This is their fourth film in eight years and you almost have to wonder whose coattails are being ridden. Scorsese is unquestionably one of the industries best filmmakers but there is also no denying the box office draw of DiCaprio. So can this dynamic duo continue their hot streak of success? You would have to be crazy to bet against them. Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a Federal Marshall sent to a remote island to help find a female inmate who has escaped from a hospital for the[....]

Even living in the provinces of the Philippines, I am aware that Southwest Airlines has a “buy two seats if you are too big” policy. So now, an overweight Hollywood guy that only the “hip” have ever heard of has decided to milk the policy for all it’s worth. If the guy is so “hip” and well known, why is he using this to get publicity? Because he is all over the news, and is planning to discuss this on Larry King Live (and yes, we get CNN International here in the provinces of the Philippines too). The media is all over it, including questioning why[....]

“Del Toro, del lobo.” When trailers for THE WOLFMAN started surfacing the buzz was that this would be a great film or a lousy film. There would be no in between. It would either be so stunning and powerful that nothing could compare or so over the top and campy that it would become laughable. But there was a third direction that many never anticipated. How about a horror film that focused on imagery and art direction so that what you have is a visual masterpiece that just happens to be about a cursed family who gets hairy and murderous when the moon is full? Lawrence Talbot[....]

If you are going to name your film after one of the most popular cultural holidays around you better make sure it lives up to the name. The new Garry Marshall directed film, VALENTINE’S DAY, is a lot like love itself. At times it is a bit confusing as it pulls you in different directions and you wonder if you will ever understand where it is taking you. Just when you think you have it figured out it makes a turn you didn’t see coming. But in the end you realize that the joy was in the entire journey as it splendidly captures every nuance of the holiday it was named for. There[....]
