It was on this day in 1941 that Joe DiMaggio tied the record with his 45th straight game with at least one hit.  DiMaggio matched the mark set by Willie Keeler of the Baltimore Orioles in 1897. It was on this day in 2002 that the finals for the World Cup were held at International Stadium in Yokohama, Japan.  Brazil defeated Germany 2-0 to earn their unprecedented fifth World Cup title. 2002 marked the first time in World Cup history that the tournament was held in Asia as well as the first time it was hosted in two countries as both South Korea and Japan shared hosting duties.  Brazil was the class of the tournament, as they won all seven games they played, outscoring their opponents by a combined 18-4.  Ronaldo won the golden boot with 8 goals, while teammate Rivaldo tied for[....]

It was on this day in 1995 that the NBA Draft took place at the Skydome in Toronto, Ontario.  This marked the first occasion that the draft was held outside of the United States. It was on this day in 1992 that MLB commissioner Fay Vincent permanently suspended New York Yankees relief pitcher Steve Howe for repeated drug offenses. Yankees management including Buck Showalter, Gene Michael and Jack Lawn agreed to testify on Howe’s behalf, which angered Vincent who threatened to expel them as well. It was on this day in 1991 that the NHL entry draft was held at the Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, New York.  The Quebec Nordiques held the #1 selection as they recorded a league low 46 points in the 1990-91 season. The Nordiques would select highly touted prospect Eric Lindros, a power forward who spent most of his junior career with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League where he totalled 180 goals and 380 points in 157 games played.  However, Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques, which led to one of the biggest trades in NHL history. It was on this day in 1997 that the NHL entry draft was held at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  The Boston Bruins had the #1 overall pick as they finished the prior season with a league low 61 points. With the #1 pick the Bruins selected centre Joe Thornton who played his junior hockey with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League.  In his two seasons in the OHL Thornton tallied 71 goals and 127 assists for 198 points in 125 games played.  Along with his great numbers, Thornton was named as the OHL’s rookie of the year and in his sophomore year[....]

It was on this day in 1979 that George Steinbrenner re-hired Billy Martin to manage the New York Yankees.  This was Martin’s second of an incredible five stints as manager of the Yankees. Martin first began managing New York in 1975, when he took over for the fired Bill Virdon and led the Yankees to a 30-26 record in the final 56 games.  In his first full season, Martin managed New York to the World Series where they would meet the reigning World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds.  The Reds proved too powerful for the Yankees and swept the series in four games. It was on this day in 2004 that the Detroit Pistons beat the Los Angeles Lakers 100-87 in Game 5 to win the NBA championship.  The win gave the Pistons their third title and first since they won back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. It was on this day in 1994 that the New York Rangers beat the Vancouver Canucks in game 7 to win the franchises fourth Stanley Cup.  This was the Rangers first championship since 1940, a span of 54 years. 1993-94 was a banner season for the New York Rangers.  In addition to winning the Stanley Cup, they also won the Presidents trophy for having the best regular season record and set a franchise record with 112 points.  Also, Madison Square Garden played host to the 45th annual NHL All-Star game where Rangers goaltender Mike Richter was named as the games Most Valuable Player. It was on this day in 1977 that Seattle Slew won the 109th running of the Belmont Stakes.  With his win at Belmont, Seattle Slew became only the tenth horse in history to win the Triple Crown and with his 9 for 9 record, the first Triple Crown winner to finish the series undefeated. It was on this day in 2007 that Lewis Hamilton won his first Formula One race.  Hamilton won the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal to become the first black man to win a Formula One race.  Hamilton was also the fifth youngest man to win on the Formula One circuit. Lewis Hamilton earned his first career pole position for this race, as he and McLaren-Mercedes teammate Fernando Alonso would start the race in the first two positions.  Hamilton was untouchable as he led for most of the race, even though the safety car was deployed an extraordinary four times which increased the chances of being[....]

It was on this day in 2006 that the 18th FIFA World Cup began in Germany.  The tournament started with the host team Germany beating Costa Rica 4-2 in the highest scoring opening match in the history of the competition.
