Non-Partner content developers uploading videos to YouTube can now provide multimedia up to 15 minutes in length. The company announced today that they have extended their 10-minute time limit effective immediately. YouTube has announced that the extension is being given since they now have more copyright controls available for content providers, which means it is less likely that users will upload copies of TV series, movies and other copyrighted materials without being censored. To promote the new 15-minute extension YouTube has launched “15 Minutes Of Fame” a contest in[....]

Even the recent announcement of Hulu Plus doesn’t fully solve the problem, with its selective library and high monthly cost. The makers of PlayOn, a useful media-streaming program for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, have a new solution, in the form of[....]

Google is among the biggest proponents of a collection of Web technologies that reproduce many important features of Adobe Systems’ Flash, but it’s not yet time for regime change at YouTube. One of the most important parts of the upcoming HTML5 standard is support for video that can be built directly into Web page without requiring a plug-in such as Flash Player. Other open standards such as Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) for formatting, Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), Web Open Font Format (WOFF) for typography can mimic Flash features, but Flash’s ability to deliver[....]

Streaming music from the cloud to your computer or mobile device is nothing new, but doing so with your own library is something that’s on the brink of becoming an everyday occurrence with upcoming efforts by Google, HP, and possibly even Apple. Enter MSpot, the latest service to promise free and unlimited streaming from the cloud to your computer or Android device. The company on Monday is finally opening up this service to everyone following a month-long private beta. To get it to work, users need to install a small piece of software on their Windows orMac computer. This lets you[....]

Just as theiPod put a new spin on the MP3 player and the Snuggie remixed the Slanket, the Kula TV from Sungale riffs on the portable television concept. On paper, the premise of the Kula TV seems airtight: give customers a Flo TV-style device with more capabilities and no monthly[....]

If you could control another person’s life for one week, what would you make them do? You might want to start thinking about that because starting Monday, an advertising recruiter named David Perez will do whatever his Twitter followers tell him to do for one week. There’s only one catch to what Perez is calling David On Demand: it must be legal. CNN first reported on Perez’s experiment. Perez’s decision to allow Twitter followers to rule his life for a week came after his boss told him that the only way the company would pay for his trip to the Cannes Lions[....]

The app version of the Wolfgang's Vault live music archive offers an impressive roster of artists in an attractive interface. (Credit:Boxee) Fans of live music and Boxee’s free media-streaming software have reason to celebrate today. No, it’s not the Boxee set-top box (though they really should get cracking on that thing before Google spoils the party). Instead, users have access to a new streaming-music app that draws from the cherished Wolfgang’s Vault catalog. With live concert recordings that date from the 1940s to present day, the Wolfgang’s Vault Web[....]

With Google’s announcement of the Google TV platform, there’s a new potential light at the end of the tunnel for those looking for an easy way to get Web-based content on their living-room TVs. But for those of us who are fans of doing things the not-so-easy way, the concept of playing video files or surfing the Web via TV is nothing new, as we’ve been doing it through off-the-shelf or custom-built media center PCs for years. Yet, as a longtime advocate of hooking a PC up to a big-screen television, I was more than a little surprised to find myself recently pulling the[....]

Once again, it looks as if the recording industry is standing square in the way of giving users what they want: access to their digital-music collections from any device in any location. Earlier on Friday, a notice appeared on Lala, announcing that the service would be shut down on May 31. Apple acquired Lala in late 2009, and a lotof folks have speculated that Apple would launch its own version of Lala’s online-music locker service, which enables users to upload their music collections to Lala’s servers, then stream those songs to any Internet-connected device. Technically,[....]

After getting the disc, they need only to insert it into the Wii to access all the content on Neflix’s streaming service. Netflix streaming for the Wii was originally announced in January. The[....]

The U.K.’s House of Commons overwhelmingly voted in favor of creating a law that would enable copyright owners to seek the suspension of Internet service of those accused multiple times of illegal file sharing. The House of Commons voted 189 to 47 to pass the Digital Economy Bill, which also seeks to give the country’s government the authority to block access to Web sites suspected of engaging in pirated material, according to British publication The Telegraph. The bill still needs to go back to the House of Lords, which is nothing more than a formality since that’s[....]

The postman, an often overlooked low-tech part of Netflix’s Web movie-rental business, may walk off the job–at least on Saturdays. The U.S. Postal Service, founded in 1775, wants to drop Saturday mail delivery as part of a plan to cut costs, according to reports in The Washington Post and elsewhere. Some observers fear that Netflix customers could revolt if the weekend becomes a dead zone for disc delivery. (Credit:CNET ) The proposal is a long way from being a sure thing. Several lawmakers and the union representing mail carriers have said they opposed a Saturday shutdown.[....]

(Credit:James Martin/CNET) Apple finally gave us the date the first iPads will hit store shelves: April 3. We’ve been closely following the touch-screen tablet since Apple first announced it in late January, but here’s a quick guide for your most essential questions about the device. First things first: How big is it? The iPad’s screen offers a maximum resolution of 1,024×768 pixels and measures 9.7 inches diagonally, 5.75 inches wide, and 7.75 inches tall. An 0.86-inch bezel frames the screen (with a hair extra room on the bottom to account for the home button),[....]

Netflix currently offers its streaming software through the browser, and on all three major gaming consoles. Could the iPhone be next? The DVD rental and streaming service is at least considering it. The blog Hacking Netflix reported Monday night that some customers are being asked if they would use a Wi-Fi version of the streaming software on their iPhone. Here is the text of one of the questions in the survey: Imagine that Netflix offers its subscribers the ability to instantly watch movies & TV episodes on their iPhone. The selection availability to instantly watch includes some[....]

Apple’s plans for cloud computing go beyond music. The company’s representatives have recently spoken with some of the major film studios about enabling iTunes users to store their content on the company’s servers, two people familiar with the discussions told CNET. That’s in addition to streaming television shows and music. (Credit:Greg Sandoval/CNET) Apple has told the studios that under the plan, iTunes users will access video from various Internet-connected devices. Apple would, of course, prefer that users access video from the iPad, the company’s[....]

Blockbuster was once one of the cornerstones of weekends and movie viewing, nearly as much a part of home entertainment as the TV set. As Blockbuster yet again rethinks its move-rental business, the beleaguered company continues to lose ground to Netflix and Redbox. No more. Amazingly, Blockbuster’s stock is trading at 40 cents a share following the company’s announcement that it had undergone another round of layoffs and corporate restructuring. Last month the once dominate video-rental chain informed investors that it would miss revenue expectations for the fourth quarter[....]
